Cassis is a plant with fragrant leaves; however, only the buds are used in perfumery. The buds are cultivated using mechanical harvesters that cut the cassis shrubs, and they germinate in January. The freshly collected buds are processed in extraction tanks at a factory. The initial extraction is performed using hexane, and after removing the buds, the hexane is evaporated to obtain the concrete. The absolute is derived by diluting this concrete with alcohol and then lowering the temperature from approximately 60°C to 0°C. When extracting buds with volatile solvents, the concrete yield is 4%, while the absolute yield from the concrete is 80%. Cassis absolute can be distilled to remove color without any degradation of its aromatic qualities.
